Autumn Berries

Out and about I’ve been taking some photographs on my ‘phone of different berries I’ve come across in the last couple of weeks. These are just some of the pictures I have taken but they give an indication of the many different berry-ing plants that can be used in gardens….

The bright red rosehips on a wild dog-rose. These roses were planted as a large bed in a garden and flower fantastically well each year with white, pink, red and purple flowers.

The Mountain Ash or Rowan trees (Sorbus aucuparia) are small trees suitable for a variety of locations. Sorbus 'Joseph Rock' has yellow berries, S. cashmiriana has white flowers in summer followed by white berries, S. vilmorinii has pink berries.

Recently I planted a section of Viburnum Daviddii in a modern planting scheme. They look fantastic just now with their bright blue berries that work well with the modern scheme. These Viburnums are often overlooked because of their large leaves which to be honest are not the most inspiring but the plant does have hidden qualities.

This is the wall shrub commonly know as Firethorn. It's botanical name being Pyracantha. The image is of Pyracantha 'Mohave' with bright red berries. Others are 'Orange Glow' with obvious orange berries and 'Soleil d'Or' with yellow.

Not everyone's favourite plant but Hypericums are good in a garden, yes they can suffer from rust and all manner of things but that's not a big enough reason not to have one or two. This is Hypericum 'Albury Purple' with red berries turning to black. It's interesting and different to the usual red berries on other plants.

It's almost obligatory to include a photo of a Cotoneaster. Vigorous in growth and covering walls with ease this is a great multi-use plant. The berries are bright and often in abundance. There are many Cotoneasters: shrubs, wall climbers and trees. Cotoneaster 'Rothschildianus' is a shrub for the larger garden but it is evergreen and has brilliant yellow berries - it's one of those 'worth having' shrubs.
