Does your property have kerb appeal?

A garden is a big asset when it comes to property sales. It may be a small paved area by the front or a horticultural expanse out the back – whatever the space it can enhance a property and even persuade a buyer to have your property instead of the one next door.  Few house buyers would actually put an untidy garden on their property wish-list! If a garden seems a little tired and in need of attention (which may well put off buyers) then here are a few pointers to improve a garden with little expense – remember it’s usually all down to simple maintenance. Mow the lawn once a week and remove the clippings. Over a few weeks this will greatly improve the look of the lawn and feeding with a general lawn fertilizer will give the grass a boost too. Fill any bare patches with grass seed. Don’t worry too much about weeds in a lawn as long as it is generally neat and tidy. A new turf lawn can be laid but it ideally needs to be done a few months in advance of a sale. Power washing and re-pointing a patio can do wonders – it may not be the ideal alfresco terrace that the buyers ideally want but it’s one less negative point for them to worry about. Topping up gravel paths and driveways can give a garden a real “lift”. If there are some broken or dangerous paths then replacing them with gravel can be a wise and cost-effective move. Borders and planting areas can be a problem if they have had little maintenance. Ideally all should be neat and tidy but on a practical level the areas immediately around the house should be well kept, especially the front garden that should be welcoming and uncluttered so out with the gnome collection! It’s important that shrubs and plants that are blocking paths, gates or a nice view are pruned and tidied, it will also make the garden feel larger to It is often advised to have planted containers in a garden. Ideally a few can add interest, a couple on the patio and one by the front door are often sufficient, it is not always best to have hanging baskets as these often forget to be watered which is probably worse than not having them at all, but if you can remember to water them then simple window boxes can brighten up plain windowsills at the front of a house. There are other smaller things that can make a difference too. Hiding the dustbin away from the front door if possible is a  good idea. Keeping the front boundary tidy such as trimming a hedge or painting the fence and gate will make an impression as will keeping an un-used greenhouse tidy – greenhouses used as a general store place are not a good thing. Finally, if there’s some garden furniture then make sure it’s out in the garden and being used – show people how much they could be enjoying this garden!
