Architecture at its best

You may be wondering why there’s an article about a cathedral on a gardening website? Read on to find out more. The truth is, it’s all about design, and having recently visited Lincoln Cathedral I can say that it  is such an awesome building of an almost impossible large scale going hand-in-hand with intricate detail that it’s hard to pass it by without being completely awestruck. This is not unlike some gardens which can also make the visitor stop and be blown away by the layout, the planting, the use of space and the setting. Lincoln Cathedral of course is far more than just impressive: it makes the visitor gawp skywards towards the towers;

then focus on the carvings and the tiniest of details that cover nearly all the building.

And isn’t that perhaps what we strive to do in garden design – create the ideal layout and then focus on creating the planting areas and the individual details? I was lucky enough to be able to walk around the cathedral early on a very cold February morning before tourists arrived, so I managed to take lots of uninterrupted photographs. Probably one of the best images is showing the gatehouse, the corner of the cathedral on the left side and the Georgian terraces on the right which all work seamlessly well together even though the architecture spans several centuries – exceptional and well considered design as well as quality craftsmanship always work well! It’s all just a mesmorizing and fantastic piece of work.
